VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT BASCC
MEALS ON WHEELS PACKERS:
Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday to help pack hot and cold meals for delivery to homebound seniors. These meals are nutritionally complete and very important to the recipients. Volunteers come to BASCC one day a week from 8:30 -10:30 am; substitutes are called a day or more in advance to work as needed. Volunteers should be able to work standing for two hours under the direction of the kitchen supervisor. Meals on Wheels is a federally-funded program that provides homebound seniors with nutritious meals.
MEALS ON WHEELS DRIVERS:
Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday to deliver pre-packaged meals to homebound seniors. The seniors value the brief visits by the volunteers as much as the food itself. Volunteers come to BASCC one day a week between 10:30 - 11:30 am to pick up meals and deliver them to up to 12 homebound seniors. Substitutes are also needed. Meal delivery requires about 1.5 hours. A route map and list of recipients are provided. Volunteers should be able to lift 20 pounds, drive safely and read a map.
CLERICAL:
The BASCC office is staffed primarily by volunteers who answer phones and greet the Center's participants. These volunteers provide the warm first impression and efficient service valued by all BASCC members and guests, while they meet new people and learn about all the activities and services provided by BASCC. Office volunteers work three and a half to four hours (morning or afternoon) one or two days a week. The office supervisor provides training, and new volunteers learn on-the-job by working with experienced volunteers. Volunteers must enjoy interacting with the public both on the phone and in person, have the ability to learn the phone system and office procedures as well as understand the different staff responsibilities.
COMPUTER SUPPORT:
Volunteers are needed to type letters and enter data using Microsoft Word and should be familiar with Windows XP for personal computers (PC). These volunteers assist in processing much of the office paperwork. Volunteers work according to their availability. Training is provided.
COMPUTER INSTRUCTORS:
Volunteers are needed to teach BASCC members basic and advanced computer usage in a one-on-one setting. These volunteers support one of the most popular activities offered at BASCC while sharing their skills. Instructors teach three, one-hour sessions each week on a day of their choice. Instructors should have a good working knowledge of the Internet, e-mail services, and several components of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). Familiarity with digital photography software (PhotoShop(TM)) or special software for the visually or physically challenged (Jaws(TM) Zoomtex(TM) etc.) is helpful but not required. Volunteers should have patience and the ability to adapt to the pace and learning style of their students.
