You must be a member in order to participate in most activities or programs at BASCC.  Please see the membership page for information about joining BASCC.  Any fee-based activity requires pre-payment and pre-registration IN PERSON if paying by check or in cash, Monday through Friday between 9 am and 4 pm.  Phone reservations require a credit card.  BASCC accepts MasterCard and VISA only.  For more information about the programs and activities described below, please contact Renee Cortright, 248-203-5270.

 

Arts and Crafts

 

DRAWING CLASS
Thursdays, 1-3 pm – September through May
Instructor:  Ilona Yates
Fee: Materials only

Learn basic techniques for drawing that gives a foundation for other art forms.  Class is limited to 15 participants.

 

KNITTING & CROCHETING
Mondays, 10 am – 12 pm

Drop-in to enjoy lively discussions and laughs with this group.  Work on your own project or use BASCC supplies to create items for donation to various charitable organizations in metro Detroit.

 

POTTERY CLASS
Thursdays, 9:30 am–12:30 pm – September through May
Instructor:  Mixie Hockman
Fee:  Materials fee - $30 per semester

Learn to create beautiful pieces of handcrafted pottery in BASCC’s art center.  Class is limited.  Call for availability.

 

QUILTING
Wednesdays, 10 am – 2 pm

Novice or experienced quilters are welcome each Wednesday for this social and creative morning.  Ladies enjoy working on individual projects and sharing ideas.  Drop-in any Wednesday and join the ladies.

 

WATERCOLOR DROP-IN CLASS
Wednesdays, 1-3 pm – September through June
Fee:  Materials only

Drop-in any Wednesday for casual instruction from group members.  Must supply your own materials.

ART/HISTORY SERIES

Enjoy descriptive lectures discussing a variety of thought-provoking details of historical periods.  Historical periods include: American, Ancient, Art, Astronomy, European, Holiday, Russian, and Women’s.

Join this group of book lovers to discuss readings by a variety of well-known authors.

 

BOOT CAMP FOR THE BRAIN

Meets the first Tuesday of the month.  Come meet new and old friends while playing trivia, charades, and other brain stimulation games

 

COMPUTER PRACTICE
Wednesdays/Thursdays – 1-3 pm

The BASCC Technology Center offers drop-in access to computers any day between 9 am and 4 pm, but Wednesday and Thursday afternoons a volunteer is usually available to answer questions.  You can sharpen skills, practice specific tasks, work on personal projects, or e-mail friends and family.

 

COMPUTER TRAINING
Monday through Thursday – By Appointment
Instructors:  Senior Volunteers
Fee:  $5 for each one-hour appointment

It’s easy to learn how to operate a computer either a PC or MAC.  BASCC instructors are ready to assist anyone, be they novice or experienced. Learn the limitless possibilities of the computer.  Instructors can teach Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and accessing the Internet and more.  Pre-payment is required.  Call BASCC for details.

 

DISCUSSION GROUP
Monthly, 1-2:30 pm – September through May
Facilitators:  Mary McDougall and Jim Saylor

This group meets the second Monday of each month and will discuss events that impact society, culture and people. The format includes viewing a brief video followed by a round table discussion.

Fitness and Sports

 

55+ AEROBICS
Tuesdays, 9-10 am - September through June
Thursdays, 10-11 am - September through July

Fee: $40/10 Classes

Participants enjoy an active paced hour focusing on toning, strengthening, and cardiovascular health designed for older adults.  Classes are co-sponsored by Birmingham’s YMCA.  Purchase an attendance card at BASCC.

 

BASCC BOWLING LEAGUE
Fridays, 10 am – September through April
Facilitator:  Betty Brozic
Fee: $6

Bowlers meet weekly each Friday morning through April at Hartfield Lanes, 3490 W. 12 Mile Road, Berkley, 248-543-9338.  Drop-in any Friday.  The $6 cost includes three games, shoes, and coffee.

 

DAILY MUSICAL WALK
Monday through Friday, 8:30 – 9 am

BASCC’s indoor walking activity offers daily periods of personally paced walks each morning.  Walk in the multi-purpose room and/or along the hallways to spirited marching music.

 

GOLF LEAGUES (Two)
Mondays 9:30 am – May through September
Wednesdays, 10:30 am – May through September

Leagues play at Springdale Golf Course on Mondays and Lincoln Hills Golf Course on Wednesdays. BASCC membership required to play. Springdale League co-managers are Bev Weiss and Bobbie Sprigg. Lincoln Hills League manager is Patrick Callanan. Check the calendar for the April meeting dates.

 

LIMBER UP
Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 9-10 am

Enjoy modified movements to meet individual needs for toning, strengthening and improvement of physical, mental, emotional and cardiovascular health.  Chair and standing exercises using aerobic steps, weights, stretch bands and foam balls offer a variety of fitness options.

 

PICKLEBALL
Tuesdays, 12:15-2:15 pm Weekly

Pickleball is a sport described as "a combination of ping-pong, tennis, and badminton."  This game is played on a badminton-sized court and is easy enough for a beginner, yet challenging enough for the advanced.

 

SENIOR SWIM ARTHRITIS EXERCISE PROGRAM

Fee: $84/12 visits

The Beaumont Health Center, 4949 Coolidge Hwy., Royal Oak, offers a choice of four one-hour aquatic exercise classes daily.  A physician’s prescription for swim therapy is required.  Punch card registrations are available at the Physical Therapy desk, Section D, in the Center.  Class times for each day vary; call 248-655-5700 for the schedule.

 

TAP DANCE CLASS
Mondays - September – May
Beginning Tap - 9:30 am
Intermediate Tap - 10:30 am

Fee: $25/Ten weeks

TENNIS LEAGUE

The league plays at the Birmingham Racquet Club, 2100 E. Lincoln, in Birmingham. The league welcomes both regular and substitute players.  All ability levels are welcome – just come and have fun.  BASCC for information about joining. TAI CHI

VOLLEYBALL

Players meet at the Christian Life Center located in the First United Methodist Church, 1589 W. Maple Road, Birmingham unless unavailable due to special events.   All BASCC members are invited to participate.

 

YOGA

Minimum number of participants is six
Cost:  $65.00/six sessions

Yoga is an ancient system of healing, toning, and rejuvenating the body.  In a non-competitive environment enjoy the benefits of increased flexibility and strength while lowering stress and anxiety.  Call BASCC for session dates.

BEGINNING BRIDGE
Mondays, 10 am – 12 pm

BASCC offers beginning bridge instruction with Al Rosie.  This class is for those with little or no bridge playing experience. 

 

BRIDGE PRACTICE
Thursdays, 9 am – 12 pm
Coaches:  Al Rosie and Bill Wiebrecht

Instruction is in an informal setting to practice new skills for preparing to play with other bridge groups.  Drop-ins are welcome.

 

DUPLICATE BRIDGE

Regulars and new comers alike enjoy playing this fun and challenging form of bridge.

 

LUNCH OUT
Monthly, 12:30 pm

Members meet monthly for visits to area restaurants to enjoy good food and friendly conversation.  Meet in the BASCC lobby to carpool for a 1 pm lunch.  For upcoming dates, restaurants and to register, call BASCC.

 

MAH JONGG
Fridays, 10 am – 12 pm

Novice or experienced players are welcome to join these groups for an enjoyable, social morning.

 

RED HAT BELLES
Monthly, 10:30 am
Queen Mum:  Barbara Gowans

This local chapter of the national Red Hat Society gathers the second Wednesday of each month.  The Red Hat Society is an organization for women aged 50 and over who gather together to simply have fun.  The only set rule is to wear an outfit of red and purple!  Any member is most welcome.  Come join the ladies to see what they are all about!

 

SING-A-LONGS
Monthly, 1-3 pm
Facilitators:  June Budzen and Bryan Childs

Join June, Bryan and other musicians each month for a rousing good time singing together. Call BASCC for upcoming dates.

 

TUESDAY EUCHRE
Tuesdays, 12:30-3 pm

No experience necessary.  Anyone who is interested in playing or learning how to play is welcome.  Drop-in and have fun!

 

WEDNESDAY BRIDGE
Wednesdays, 12-3 pm
Facilitator:  Vi Stonehouse

Bridge players rotate tables after six hands of play.  Bring a bag lunch or register for a hot lunch the week prior ($2.75).
